Kiwanis
Club of Toano Top Banana Award
by Joyce Craig
Bill Craig was given the
first "Top Banana Award" at the October 14 Kiwanis Club of Toano Club meeting. Terry
Sweaney, President, originated this weekly award for
the member who made a big impact during the previous
week and selected Bill for his work on the new Pig
Pickin' sign at Toano Bruton VFD. Each recipient will
sign the monkey, named Kiwi, take it home or to work
for the week, and bring it back to the next meeting
to be handed to a new recipient. At the end of the
year, the monkey will be auctioned off to a chosen
charity.

Many individuals join Kiwanis clubs specifically because we are an international
organization with a global mission-that lofty goal of changing
the world one child and one community at a time. To this
point, with a few notable exceptions, our Capital District
clubs seem to have focused on local efforts directed toward
helping our own children and communities. This is commendable,
but it does not address the incredible needs of children
worldwide...Accordingly,
our District Committee on International Understanding has
decided to pursue a new approach
to achieving our global mission. We have selected Africa because its needs are great and most of us know extremely
little about this part of the world...
