Crofton
Club Donates to Sarah's House and Caring Council
by Joe Narcavage

As
part of its many ongoing community service efforts,
the Kiwanis Club of Crofton recently provided significant
donations to several local charitable organizations.
A check for $10,000 was presented to the Sarah's House
current director, Kathryn Philliben, which will be
used toward children's summer programs at the Sarah's
House shelter. Sarah's House provides emergency shelter
for homeless families and operates in facilities on
the edge of Fort George G. Meade Army Base.
Additionally, and in conjunction with the Greater
Crofton Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of
Crofton presented a check for over $12,000 (proceeds
from the 2008 annual "Dave
Espie Memorial" Charity Golf Classic) to Nancy Mills, a representative of the Crofton Christian
Caring Council. The Council is made up of a group
of local Crofton churches, and provides various forms
of assistance for needy community members.

Many individuals join Kiwanis clubs specifically because we are an international
organization with a global mission-that lofty goal of changing
the world one child and one community at a time. To this
point, with a few notable exceptions, our Capital District
clubs seem to have focused on local efforts directed toward
helping our own children and communities. This is commendable,
but it does not address the incredible needs of children
worldwide...Accordingly,
our District Committee on International Understanding has
decided to pursue a new approach
to achieving our global mission. We have selected Africa because its needs are great and most of us know extremely
little about this part of the world...
